“I was supposed to be a doctor.”

That was the plan, at least. Growing up, like many kids, I felt the weight of expectation—from my family, my peers, and even myself. My father, with the best intentions, envisioned a stable and respected career for me in medicine. And for a while, I followed that path, believing it was the only road to success. But a life path chosen by others, no matter how well-meaning, can sometimes feel like a destination you were never meant to reach. My journey to the stage wasn’t a straight line; it was a detour born of passion, a lesson in resilience, and the discovery of my own, true voice—a story I’m humbled to see has resonated with many and been shared across various platforms.

The Crossroads at Allen Career Institute

After finishing 12th grade, I enrolled at the prestigious Allen Career Institute to prepare for the NEET examination, the gateway to medical school. I was surrounded by some of the brightest, most driven students in the country. I studied hard, I went through the motions, but with each passing day, I felt a growing “absence of fulfilment”. I was checking all the right boxes, but the passion that fuels true dedication simply wasn’t there. It was a difficult and confusing time, realizing that the dream everyone had for me wasn’t actually my own. It was at this crossroads that I had to make one of the toughest decisions of my life: to walk away from the prescribed path and search for my own.

The Spark: Discovering a Calling

The moment of clarity came unexpectedly. I was attending a function and found myself completely captivated by the woman on stage who was anchoring the event. She commanded the room with such grace, energy, and confidence. In that instant, something clicked. I realized that that was what I wanted to do. It was a feeling of certainty that I had never experienced while studying biology or chemistry.

My career started with humble beginnings, taking on any small gig I could find to gain experience and build my confidence. I was studying Occupational Therapy at university, but I dedicated every spare moment to my newfound passion. Then came my big break: an opportunity to host an event for Lakme. That event propelled me forward, opening doors and affirming that I had made the right choice. I was finally on a path that felt like my own.

Overcoming Obstacles and Building Resilience

Choosing an unconventional career like anchoring wasn’t easy. Initially, my conservative family was opposed to my choice, concerned about the late-night work commitments and the glamorous attire associated with the industry. It was a battle of wills, but as I became more independent, I learned to stand by my decisions. The greatest achievement for me now is not just the applause from an audience, but the moments “when her family appreciates her” and respects the career I have built for myself.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought its own set of challenges, disrupting the event industry and pausing my work. But instead of giving up, I chose to persevere. I saw it as an opportunity to adapt and grow. This period of uncertainty taught me the importance of resilience and the power of finding new ways to connect with people.

The Birth of ‘Dawaai Waali’: Integrating My Two Worlds

During the lockdown, I decided to create a YouTube channel called “Dawaai Waali”. It was a way to bridge my two worlds. I could use the knowledge I had gained from my medical studies to share helpful information, but do it in my own way—through a camera, connecting with an audience. This project brought me immense joy. It taught me that my past wasn’t something to be discarded, but a unique part of my story that gave me a different perspective. It allowed me to honor my family’s dream for me while still pursuing my own passion for communication. This fusion of knowledge and performance has become a cornerstone of who I am as a professional.

Living in the Present

My journey has taught me invaluable lessons. It has taught me that sometimes the most rewarding paths are the ones we forge for ourselves. Today, I am grateful to be earning well in a career I love, hosting for incredible brands and sharing in people’s most important moments.

If there is one piece of advice I can offer from my experience, it is this: “Live in the present, be patient, and trust in the natural unfolding of your life’s journey”. Your true potential is already within you. Sometimes, you just have to be brave enough to step off the beaten path to find it.
